He is most renowned for playing one of the original Billys in Billy Elliot the Musical on Broadway and for being one of the youngest winners of the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. He received his ballet training from American Ballet Theatre, and he will play Bernardo in the 2021 West Side Story movie directed by Steven Spielberg.

David Alvarez Early life and education
Cuban parents gave birth to Alvarez as David Alvarez-Gonzalez in Montreal, Quebec. His mother Yanek is an actress and theater director, while his father David Alvarez-Carbonell teaches biology and chemistry. His native tongues were Spanish and French. His family relocated to San Diego, California, where his father secured employment at The Scripps Research Institute.
At the California dance, Alvarez developed a deeper interest in classical dance. Alvarez’s family moved to New York City in 2005 after he was awarded a full merit scholarship to the American Ballet Theatre’s (ABT) Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. Alvarez performed in lead roles in both The Sleeping Beauty at the Metropolitan Opera House and The Nutcracker at the Kennedy Center Opera House while he was a member of ABT. Billy Elliot
Along with Kiril Kulish and Trent Kowalik, Alvarez was one of the three boys originally chosen to play Billy in the Broadway version of Billy Elliot the Musical.* For the part, he had to study acting, voice, tap, and acrobatics. He prepared from July 2007 to March 2008. On October 1, 2008, Billy Elliot the Musical went on stage, and on October 2, Alvarez gave its first sneak peek. On January 3, 2010, he gave the part his last performance.
Critics, such as Ben Brantley, Claudia La Rocco of The New York Times, and Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times, were quite complimentary of Alvarez’s portrayal of Billy Elliot. He was highlighted at the 62nd Tony Awards ceremony, as well as on Live with Regis and Kelly, The View, Sunday Morning on CBS News, The Today Show, Canada AM on CTV, CBC News, and Despierta America on Univision.
Alvarez became one of the youngest winners of the Tony Award when he shared the prize with Kulish and Kowalik for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. Billy Elliot won 10 Tony Awards and was nominated for fifteen, including Best Musical.

Later work
Alvarez enlisted in the US Army after leaving theater. After serving for 2.5 years in the 25th Infantry Division, he came back to Broadway and landed a swing role in a 2015 production of On the Town. Alvarez performed as an adult Billy in a dream ballet pas de deux between Billy and his elder self in Mexico in 2016.
In the 2021 television series American Rust on Showtime, David Alvarez plays Isaac English.
He tried out for the 2021 West Side Story movie directed by Steven Spielberg in 2018 while he was a student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He performs in this musical adaptation as Bernardo.
