The Ryerson Institute of Technology was founded in 1948 and was named after Egerton Ryerson, a key contributor to the construction of the Canadian public education system. His ideas impacted the creation of the Canadian Indian residential school system. The college was renamed Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in 1964 after being reformed under provincial legislation.

During the 1970s, the institution was granted limited degree-granting authority under that name. Ryerson Polytechnic University was established in 1993 after the institution was reformed as a full-fledged university. Ryerson University was created in 2002, some years after the university’s School of graduate studies was established. In acknowledgment of Egerton Ryerson’s involvement in the residential school system and its negative impact on indigenous cultures, the university was renamed Toronto Metropolitan University in 2022.
