Scholarship Overview

Scholars of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship must:

• Participate in Foundation in-person and online events, such as custom-designed Institutes of Engaged Leadership and Retreats, throughout their first year of office. NOTE: Due to the scenario created by COVID-19, the format of future events will be modified to comply with national and local regulations. If conditions permit, some small in-person gatherings may take place. In the meantime, the Foundation will continue to engage its community via digital events.
• During the second year of the leadership program, organize a conference event (Impact Conference) and present it during the third year.
• Volunteer in their communities: Outside of Foundation programming, active Scholars are expected to do 30 hours of volunteer service or community initiatives each year and to report on their activities to the Foundation. Volunteerism is interpreted broadly by the Foundation, particularly in the context of COVID-19.
• If they are not fluent in both of Canada’s Official Languages (French and English), take steps to increase their ability in the Official Language with which they are less familiar, either through formal or informal training. Scholars also agree to learn more about Canada’s Indigenous languages through the leadership program.

To be eligible for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

You must have already been accepted into or be in year one or two of a full-time doctoral program, with plans to complete your studies in four years or later.

Your topic of study is broadly related to the humanities or human sciences and has direct relevance to Canada’s future; (please refer to the FAQ for more details and read up on past scholarship recipients)

Your dissertation must address at least one of the Foundation’s four themes: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada and the World, and people and their natural environment.

You must be a Canadian citizen enrolled in a Ph.D. program at a Canadian or foreign university, or a non-Canadian (permanent resident of Canada or foreign national) enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution.

• Demographic information about yourself: In order to fulfill its commitment to diversity and inclusion, the Foundation collects demographic information about you for statistical purposes. The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation will only utilize this information.
• Essay Questions: Respond (in 200-400 words) to four essay questions.
• Doctorate Projects and Themes: Provide information about your doctoral project in answers of 200 to 400 words.
• Referees: In the boxes provided, enter the names and email addresses of two referees. At least one of them must be an academic referee who can comment on your academic performance at university. For further information, see “Get recommendations” below.
• Language Skills, Post-secondary Education, Achievements, and Experience: Include information about your language skills, post-secondary education, accomplishments (such as scholarships, fellowships, awards, publications, conferences, extracurricular and volunteer activities), and relevant work experience.
• Transcripts: Upload transcripts for all of your post-secondary education, with the exception of material pertaining to CEGEP in Quebec, if you attended CEGEP in Quebec.
• Read and comprehend the Foundation’s policies: All candidates are required to acknowledge that they have read and comprehended the Foundation’s core policies.

Winners of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship receive:

• Membership in a thriving community of Scholars, Mentors, and Fellows who are all leaders in their respective subjects and areas.
• Our Mentors and Fellows provide leadership training, as well as unique experiential learning experiences that deepen and supplement their academic experience.
• Possibilities to improve skill in Canada’s official languages (French and English) as well as Indigenous languages
• Membership in the Foundation’s alumni network for life.
• Up to $40,000 per year for three years to cover tuition and modest living expenses so that they can concentrate on their Ph.D. studies and the Foundation’s leadership program.
• Up to $20,000 per year for three years for language instruction (see below), travel and lodging for the Foundation’s leadership program, and doctoral research, networking, and travel.
