The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program gives financial assistance to outstanding scholars enrolled in an approved master’s or, in some cases, doctorate program in Canada (refer to Eligibility for more information). This assistance enables these academics to focus entirely on their research in their chosen subjects. This scholarship is one of the Top 10 Best Scholarships in Canada for all Students.

The Goal of the Canada Graduate Scholarships

The goal of the Canada Graduate Scholarships-(CGS Master’s M) Program is to support students who have demonstrated a high level of success in undergraduate and early graduate studies in order to aid build research capabilities and assist in the training of highly competent professionals. The Tri-Council provides CGS M awards to universities, outlining the number of prizes each university may offer to students each year. CGS M grants are only available to graduate students at qualified Canadian universities, and the award must be held at the university that made the offer.

The Canada Graduate Scholarship is accessible to those who want to pursue a master’s degree in Canada. The scholarship is open to all fields of study.

Host Nationality

The CGS M program, which supports up to 3,000 students per year across all disciplines, is jointly administered by Canada’s three granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The selection process and post-award administration are handled at the institutional level, under the supervision of the three agencies. Eligible Nationality

This scholarship is strictly open to Canadians or permanent Canadian residents only. There are other scholarships in Canada available for you if you are not eligible for this one.

Required Criteria for Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program

  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) as of the application due date
  • be enrolled in, have applied for, or will apply for full-time admission to an appropriate graduate program at the master’s or doctorate level at a Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation
  • Respect the internal deadline for applying for admission to your desired program of study—for more information, contact the faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at the selected Canadian institution(s).
  • have finished by December 31st of the year of application
    • either 0 to 12 months of full-time studies (or full-time equivalent) in the program for which you are applying for funding, which might be one of the following:
      • a master’s degree program
      • a doctoral program that you enter immediately from a bachelor’s degree program without having previously attended any graduate programs (direct entry)
      • a master’s-doctoral program coupled
      • a master’s program that will lead to a qualifying doctoral program either before or after the award is activated, with no master’s degree given (fast-track)
      • a master’s program in which the degree requirements will be fulfilled before the scholarship expires, allowing the award to be transferred to an eligible doctoral program
    • or between 4 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in a qualifying master’s program, with the degree requirements completed prior to award activation, allowing it to be activated during the first 12 months of the succeeding Ph.D. program for which you are requesting support.
  • not have previously held or currently hold a CGS M scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC
  • having earned a first-class average** in each of the last two years of study, as decided by the host school (full-time equivalent)
  • submit one scholarship (master’s or doctorate) or fellowship application to CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC per academic year

Financial Coverage

The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program awards winners $17,500. This scholarship award is non-renewable for one year.

Deadline for the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program

Canada Graduate Scholarship applications must be submitted by December 1 before 8:00 p.m. (ET). Note: As the application deadline approaches, delays may arise owing to a high amount of users on the Research Portal, which may prevent your application from being submitted on time. Late application requests will not be entertained.

It is your responsibility to monitor the Research Portal for competition results on a regular basis between April 1 and January 31. More information about the communication of results can be found in the instructions for completing an application.
