Application Deadline: 20 May 2022 (midnight, Paris time).

The UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education recognizes and rewards individuals, institutions, and organizations who have made outstanding and innovative contributions to the advancement of girls’ and women’s education. In addition to being the first of its kind, it is unique in that it recognizes and celebrates successful projects that improve and promote the educational prospects of girls and women, and as a result, the overall quality of their lives.

With funding provided by the Chinese government, the Prize is awarded annually to two laureates who each receive a US $50,000 award to assist them in continuing their work in the field of girls’ and women’s education. The Prize is funded entirely by the Chinese government. The Prize was awarded for the first time in 2016 by the Director-General of UNESCO, who was also the recipient.

The Prize, which was established by the Executive Board of UNESCO, makes a direct contribution to the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, particularly SDG 4 on education and SDG 5 on equality between men and women. UNESCO’s global priorities, which include the Medium-Term Strategy 2022-2029 and the Gender Equality Action Plan 2014-2021 (GEAP II), as well as the UNESCO Strategy for Gender Equality in and through Education, are also supported (2022-2029).
