The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is the agency responsible for granting liquor licenses and permits to businesses, including restaurants and bars. Also called the TABC, it will grant provisional or temporary permits to certain groups for fundraising purposes. Before you apply for a liquor license, you might hear horror stories from those turned down for a number of reasons, which will make you worry if you can get a license. There are a few ways that you can ensure you get that license the first time that you apply.
Meet Residency Requirements
It wasn’t that long ago that the TABC only issued permits and licenses to those who were Texas residents for at least one full year before applying, but the agency removed this requirement in 2007. That does not meet that anyone can walk in off the street and apply though. You must be a citizen of the United States or have a work permit that allows you to work and/or run a business in America. Anyone who does not meet one of these requirements and applies for a license risks deportation back to their home countries.
Complete the Full Application
The full application for obtaining a TABC permit is now available online, which makes it easier to apply. When filling out this application, make sure that you fill out each section. You must first select the type of permit that you need based on whether you own a restaurant, bar or nightclub, a retail shop or a wholesale business. This application will ask if you own a corporation or LLC and for basic information such as your name, current address, work experience and whether you have any criminal charges in Texas or other states.
Be As Honest As Possible
A common reason the TABC will turn down liquor license applications is because those applicants outright lie or fudge their personal details. When the TABC issues a license or permit, it is only valid for the name of the person listed on the paperwork. It is illegal to apply for a license in one name or to transfer a name on a license without permission from the agency. Lying about your background or other things can result in the TABC denying your license and forbidding you from applying again in the future. If you need help filling out the application and filing, you can work with a consulting company that will do the work for you.
